LMD Launches Innovative New Website for UM School of Nursing

LAUREL, MD   January 25, 2010   LMD was recognized in the Fall/Winter 2009 edition of University of Maryland Nursing Magazine for its leadership and innovative approach in designing a new website for the University of Maryland School of Nursing, launched in October 2009.

The site includes a fresh look, updates to the architecture for improved navigation, and appealing visual and interactive elements. Other components include a centralized calendar; student, faculty, and staff login pages; and improved search capability. In addition, the new site is modular, allowing the School to use Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs, wikis, and other engaging features. The new site can be viewed at: http://nursing.umaryland.edu/.

LMD worked with Bryan Hantman, director of web development and e-communications at the School of Nursing, as well as the Office of Communications, to actively involve the School's community and incorporate their feedback. The team met with a web advisory committee; conducted telephone interviews and online surveys; and posted blogs, all with the goal of involving the entire School in the redesign process.

"Research shows that approximately 40 percent of today's students make a decision on whether to apply to a school prior to (or even without) a phone call, an email, or a campus visit," said Hantman. "That is why attracting more prospective students and lifelong learners, along with showcasing the quality programs offered at our School, were among the main goals of the new website design."
