About the Client
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency protects human health and the environment throughscience, research, education, and assessment efforts. EPA’s Office of Wastewater Management (OWM)
oversees a range of programs contributing to the wellbeing of the nation’s waters and watersheds.
Challenge
EPA enlisted LMD’s help in creating and executing marketing communications programs
targeting multiple national audiences, including consumers, municipal government officials,
industry professionals, and program partners, with the objectives of:
- Educating the public on wastewater management issues and their impact on the environment.
- Promoting the adoption of sustainable and best practices for water, wastewater, and
stormwater management. - Communicating the importance and benefits of practicing water efficiency in homes,
businesses, and institutions throughout the United States. - Encouraging utilization of available Federal funding to initiate qualifying environmentally
friendly projects.
Solution
LMD assists the OWM in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing a wide variety of
social marketing communications initiatives supporting adoption of effective and sustainable
wastewater management methods. Projects underway include:
- Decentralized Wastewater Public Outreach: LMD developed a national education campaign
strategy and branding platform to inform the general public of the financial and health risks
posed by failing septic systems, as well as to promote proper system care and maintenance. - WaterSense Program Marketing Support: LMD is conducting audience-specific research,
developing a comprehensive marketing plan, creating audience-specific messaging, and
designing educational outreach materials. - WaterSense Website: Using consumer-focused research, LMD enhanced the user experience
of the WaterSense website by improving the design, site architecture, content, and functionality. - American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARA) Implementation: LMD is developing
branded outreach materials targeting various national audiences with the goal of promoting
implementation of ARRA funding through the 2009 Green Reserve requirement. - Sustainable Infrastructure (SI) Outreach for Local Officials: LMD is developing a national
outreach campaign to educate local government officials on sustainable infrastructure issues
and promote acceptance and support for effective water management practices. This campaign
will include a program brand and microsite targeting local officials.
Outcome
WaterSense Website: EPA has received positive feedback from the general public and programpartners on the site’s enhanced design and ease of navigation.
